Sardinia has the dreamiest beaches of Europe, including white sandy beaches and the clearest blue seas. Not only the more known by the celebrities area of Costa Smeralda’s but also the amazing bays of the Golf di Orosei, Costa Verde and not forgetting the Costa del Sud are stunning!! I have to admit, maybe a bit naive….. but Sardinia surprised me in a super positive way. See below the route I suggest you to take so you don’t miss out on anything of this beautiful and diverse Italian island. Sardinia is not only a great destination if you love beaches but also the mountains, food and culture lovers will adore Sardinia too!!
Start of this route is in Olbia and ends in Cagliari of course you can to the route other way around too. See the map with the seven colored parts of Sardinia that will respond to these places and sights below:
1: Northeast Sardinia: Costa Smeralda & La Maddalena
Arriving in Olbia, explore the Costa Smeralda, cruising the Arcipelago di La Magdalena, walking and relaxing in Arzachena & sunbathing in Cala Brandinchi. See blog here.
2: East Sardinia: Golfo di Orosei & Orgosolo
In this East part of Sardinia the nature is overwhelming. The limestone mountains drop into the ocean in the nearby Golfo di Orosei. The cliffs are robust and melt down into the aquamarine waters. The mountain range is one of the deepest valleys in Europe. History is everywhere and the area breaths outdoor activities. Don’t miss this part of the island!! See blog here.
3: Northwest Sardinia: Alghero & Grotta di Nettuno
In this part of Sardinia I will give you inspirations to wander through the streets of the old town of Alghero, climb down and up to the fairy-tale Grotta di Nettuno, relax at Mugoni Beach close to Alghero and drive the stunning scenery coastal route called SP105 all the way to Bosa. See blog here.
4: West Sardinia: Oristano & Sinis Peninsula
Here you can find your inspirations of the highlights of the West part of Sardinia. For example surf in Putzu Idu, sleep, shop and eat in Oristano, spot dozens of flamingo’s at Stagno di Cabras, chill at Is Aruttas, enjoy the amazing view at Roman Tharros & sleep in Riola Sardo. See blog here.
5: Southwest Sardinia: Costa Verde to Iglesias
Discover the Costa Verde including the excluded Spiaggia di Piscinas, cruise via Spiaggia Portixeddu, Buggerru, Cala Domestica to Porto Flavia & enjoy the nice town of Iglesias. See blog here.
6: South Sardinia: Costa del Sud to Pula
Spot the dunes and blue water in Porto Pino, drive the amazing Strada Panoramica del la Costa del Sud, get a tan at the most beautiful spots Cala Teuradda and Chia & have dinner in the best restaurants in Pula (Sardinia). See blog here.
7: South Sardinia: Cagliari
Go back in time in Cagliari & get out of the city to Poetto Beach. See blog here.
I understand that my way of traveling is not working for everybody. Couples that are adventurous and like to see and explore things can follow my route. For families with young kids they probably like to stay a longer time in one place. But I love to discover things so I slept only one or two days in one place and explored the area driving from one place to another. I did not book all my accommodation in advance. The first week I planned the route but after that I wanted to be free and book it along the route which is perfect to do with the booking.com app on my phone.
Go and explore Sardinia!!
